Jaylee Lowe

Seminole and Muscogee (Creek)

About

Jaylee Lowe is an award-winning Seminole patchwork artist. She taught herself how to sew by studying the traditional skirts made by her late maternal grandmother. She began sharpening her skills by sewing exclusively for her family but has since shared her work with others across the country. Jaylee continues her family's legacy of traditional Seminole patchwork through her dedication to reviving old ancestral designs that were passed down to her. Using her knowledge of the traditional patterns she creates ornate pieces that rely on geometry to create precise designs. Jaylee’s work can be distinguished by her prioritization of remnants which is reflected in the colors of the various patterns seen throughout her work. Remnants are significant to her art making process as the technique has been used traditionally as a way to not forget the history of the Seminole people and to continue to carry it with them on their clothing. Whether it is traditional Seminole clothing or contemporary items, each of Jaylee’s pieces carries a unique story.
