The practice of my art in the community helps to bring attention to cultural issues and helps to maintain pride in the community here, even with the non-natives. I have had the opportunity represent my community and state internationally, with carving projects in England, Australia, Germany, and other parts of Europe. This helps promote a better understanding of art and culture and promotes tourism to Alaska, where people can get a taste of the art and culture firsthand.
“With his expertise in Northwest Coast Native art and skills as a carver, Nathan Jackson has reintroduced fine pieces of art that also serve as Native ceremonial instruments, such as monumental clan house posts, and intricately-carved clan hats. He approaches difficult carving projects with confidence and understanding of how they should be carved, what purpose they serve, and their historical background. Nathan has helped to propagate the art, traditions and culture of the Southeast Alaska Native people through his teachings at the Totem Heritage Center and the University of Alaska, his sharing the art with several apprentices, and the knowledge that he shares freely with others.” – Janice Jackson, Nominator
