BIOGRAPHY
Terry Pechota is a former U.S. District Attorney, the first Sioux Indian to be named to that position. He became interested in law during college when he took a constitutional law class and began reading about old case law involving people from the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. He is now in private practice, specializing in Indian affairs.
Terry was born in Winner, SD and was raised in nearby Colome. He has more than 40 years of experience in private law practice in South Dakota since receiving his Juris Doctorate from the University of Iowa Law School in 1972. He received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Education from Black Hills State University.
Mr. Pechota is an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, is widely considered a pioneer as a Native American practicing law in the United States.
